Transport and Energy Ministers from across Africa have thrown their weight behind a shift towards greener and more people-friendly transport systems.
Meeting at the 5th Ordinary Session of the African Union Specialised Technical Committee on Transport and Energy, Ministers endorsed two key frameworks, the Pan-African Action Plan for Active Mobility and a Continental Framework on Electric Mobility.
In simple terms, the plans aim to make it easier and safer for people to walk and cycle, while also accelerating the move towards electric vehicles across the continent.
The push comes as African countries grapple with rising road accidents, worsening air pollution and the growing impact of climate change.
Officials say the idea is not just about cutting emissions, but also about improving everyday life, making cities safer, transport more accessible, and opening up new economic opportunities.
Together, the two frameworks are expected to guide countries on how to attract investment, strengthen policies, and take practical steps towards cleaner transport systems.
