World Trade Organisation (WTO) prepares for its most ambitious reforms in 30 years

Senior international trade consultant Collins Nweke has called on African countries to tap into the expertise of their diaspora as the World Trade Organisation (WTO) prepares for its most ambitious reforms in 30 years.

Speaking to economics reporter Innocent Semosa, Nweke stressed that Africa’s talent is abundant but often goes unrecognised.

“Africa is not short of skilled professionals; what it lacks are systems that identify and deploy this talent effectively,” he said. “Our diaspora includes top trade lawyers, negotiators, and economists. Bringing them into these reforms would immediately strengthen Africa’s position.”

Nweke warned that African nations cannot remain passive observers in global trade discussions. Integrating the Diaspora’s knowledge and experience, he said, is key to closing gaps and ensuring the continent has a meaningful voice in international trade policy.
