The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) is set to convene its 81st Ordinary Session, bringing together human rights defenders, state representatives, and civil society delegates from across the continent to evaluate pressing protection challenges and examine state compliance with the African Charter.
Scheduled to run from November 9 to December 4, 2026, the continental gathering will address a broad spectrum of human rights concerns, including the shrinking of civic and political spaces, accountability for state-sponsored abuses, and the protection of journalists, human rights lawyers, and vulnerable groups.
According to human rights monitors, the upcoming deliberations are expected to place intense scrutiny on regional compliance trends, with particular attention directed at systemic restrictions on peaceful assembly, legislative crackdowns on freedom of expression, and ongoing impunity surrounding political violence in several member states.
