East African lenders lead continent on Forbes’ 2026 World Bank ranking

Commercial banks across Africa have made a strong showing on the global stage following the release of Forbes’ inaugural ranking of the world’s top-performing financial institutions for 2026.

The new index, compiled alongside market research firm Statista, evaluates 500 top-performing lenders across 89 countries. Rather than relying on customer satisfaction surveys, the assessment looks strictly at hard financial performance, scoring institutions on profitability, capital resilience, asset quality, efficiency, and earnings growth over a three-year period.

African institutions feature prominently on the list, led by East African heavyweights including Equity Group Holdings, KCB Group, Co-operative Bank of Kenya, and Stanbic Holdings. Their inclusion reflects how regional expansion, aggressive digital transformation, and disciplined balance sheet management have helped major African lenders maintain robust growth and record earnings despite persistent macroeconomic headwinds.

Financial analysts say the recognition gives the continent’s banking sector a welcome boost in global visibility, helping to attract foreign investment and strengthen international investor confidence as African lenders continue expanding their footprint.
