Agulhas National Park at the southernmost tip of Africa has received a $5 million investment

The Agulhas National Park at the southernmost tip of Africa has received a $5 million investment to upgrade its lighthouse precinct, in a move aimed at boosting local tourism and economic activity in the surrounding semi-rural community.

The project is a partnership between the Department of Tourism and South African (SA) National Parks, which falls under the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment.

Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille said domestic tourism remains the backbone of the sector and key to spreading economic benefits beyond major cities.

“Domestic tourism is the bedrock of our tourism industry. SA is more than Table Mountain, more than safaris,” she said, adding that sites such as Cape Agulhas should help attract visitors to smaller towns and villages.

The upgrade includes a new 60-seater beachfront restaurant and an interactive interpretation centre, with officials hoping the development will strengthen Agulhas as a key heritage and tourism destination.
