Africa’s climate ambitions are set to come under renewed scrutiny

Africa’s climate ambitions are set to come under renewed scrutiny as leaders, investors and policymakers prepare to gather in South Africa’s Cape Town for the Green Economy Summit 2026.

With major funding gaps continuing to slow progress across the continent, the summit will place a strong emphasis on turning climate pledges into bankable, investment-ready projects, particularly within Africa’s growing green and blue economy sectors.

Organisers say the event aims to bridge the divide between policy commitments and actual capital flows by bringing together governments, development finance institutions, private investors and project developers.

Speaking ahead of the summit, Iain Banner, Founder and Chairperson of the Green Economy Summit, said Africa has no shortage of ambition or viable climate solutions, but access to finance remains a major obstacle.

He said the focus would be on creating practical pathways that allow investors to confidently back projects in renewable energy, sustainable infrastructure, ocean-based industries and climate-resilient development.

The Green Economy Summit 2026 is expected to attract high-level participation from across Africa and beyond, with discussions also set to address regulatory reform, risk mitigation and blended finance models to unlock large-scale investment.
