ICRC scales up food and medical aid in Sudan’s North Kordofan

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Sudan Red Crescent Society (SRCS) have scaled up emergency humanitarian assistance across Al Obeid and North Kordofan to support families caught in the country’s ongoing conflict.

More than 42 000 displaced people living in camps and urban settlements have received a month’s worth of food rations. Additionally, nutritional supplements are being distributed to over 7 000 children and pregnant or breastfeeding women to counter rising malnutrition.

The escalating fighting has severely damaged vital infrastructure, leaving communities without water, electricity, or communications. Freya Raddi, the ICRC’s Head of Operations in Sudan, urged fighting forces to protect civilians and critical services. “Hostilities must be conducted in a way that spares civilians and civilian objects from harm,” Raddi said, emphasising that preserving water and power networks is vital for survival.

The conflict has placed immense pressure on local healthcare, with the Al Obeid Teaching Hospital treating more than 850 weapon-wounded patients since the start of the year. To assist, the ICRC and SRCS have delivered trauma kits, emergency equipment, and cholera-response materials to local clinics.

On the ground, 36 trained Red Crescent volunteers are providing first aid across 12 displacement camps, while emergency teams work with water authorities to drill and repair local boreholes to ensure access to clean water.
