Algeria’s national carrier Air Algerie resumed direct flights to Tripoli

Algeria’s national carrier Air Algerie resumed direct flights to Tripoli this Wednesday after a halt of ‌nearly 12 years, the internationally recognised Government of National Unity media office said.

The airline will initially operate two flights a week, the media office said.

Many international airlines suspended flights to and from Libya after the 2014 civil war, which spawned rival administrations in the east and west following the NATO-backed uprising that toppled Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.

Some airlines resumed services after a 2020 ceasefire largely halted major fighting. Efforts ‌to resolve the political crisis have failed, however, with rival factions occasionally clashing and competing for control of economic resources.

The media office posted photographs of the reopening ceremony at Tripoli’s Mitiga airport, the capital’s only functioning airport, showing an Air Algerie aircraft.

On Monday, the Transport Ministry said airspace restrictions imposed by the United Nation’s International Civil Aviation Organisation in 2015 during the civil war had been lifted.
