Algeria has been validated by the World Health Organisation (WHO) for eliminating Trachoma as a public health problem, a major step in tackling preventable blindness.
The country becomes the 10th in Africa to achieve this milestone, following decades of sustained health interventions.
Trachoma, caused by Chlamydia trachomatis, remains the leading infectious cause of blindness globally, affecting millions, particularly in poorer regions.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the achievement shows what consistent effort can deliver.
“This proves that neglected tropical diseases can be eliminated with strong commitment,” he said.
Algeria used the WHO-backed SAFE strategy, combining treatment, hygiene and improved sanitation, to bring the disease under control.
