Human rights group Amnesty International says bodies went missing from morgues in several Tanzanian

Human rights group Amnesty International says bodies went missing from morgues in several Tanzanian cities after security forces moved to crush anti-government protests in October and November.

According to Amnesty, security agents are alleged to have removed bodies from mortuaries, leaving families struggling to trace relatives who were reported killed during the unrest. In Dar es Salaam, the organisation says the families of eight victims were unable to locate their bodies despite making repeated enquiries.

Amnesty argues the alleged actions raise serious questions about whether the true number of deaths has been concealed. The group has called for transparency and independent investigations into the handling of fatalities linked to the protests.

The main opposition party, Chadema, has claimed that more than 2 000 people were killed during the crackdown, though the government has not released any official figures and has not responded publicly to the allegations.

The protests, which erupted in several cities, were dispersed by security forces amid mounting criticism over governance and economic pressures, according to rights organisations.

Amnesty has urged Tanzanian authorities to account for all those who died and to ensure families are informed of the fate of their loved ones.
