Amnesty International South Africa (SA) has strongly criticised the killing of a witness who gave evidence before the Madlanga Commission recently, describing the incident as both shocking and unacceptable.
The organisation warned that such an attack risks discouraging other witnesses from stepping forward, especially at a time when their cooperation is vital.
According to Amnesty International SA, the killing represents a direct assault on efforts to secure justice and accountability in the country. It proves that witnesses and whistleblowers must be afforded robust protection to ensure the commission is able to conduct its work without intimidation or interference.
The organisation has urged the government and the SA Police Service to pursue a comprehensive and credible investigation that results in arrests and successful prosecutions. Anything less, it cautioned, would further undermine the safety of individuals who still intend to provide testimony.
