Amnesty International South Africa (SA) will be staging its second silent demonstration for human rights defenders today at the venue where Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia and police leadership will be releasing the quarterly crime statistics.
The demonstration will take place at the Government Communication and Information System offices in Pretoria, Gauteng province.
The organisation says targeted killings in SA are being used as a tactic to silence human rights defenders, including whistleblowers and those working to expose corruption and wrongdoing in the country.
It adds that authorities continue to fail to protect human rights defenders who play a crucial role in ensuring accountability and advancing human rights and social justice.
The organisation says many of these individuals face intimidation, harassment, threats and attacks, and in some cases death, because of their efforts to defend human rights.
