Amnesty calls for urgent international funding for Central African Republic tribunal

Suspects implicated in severe international law violations in the Central African Republic (CAR), including top government and military figures, face a growing likelihood of impunity if the Special Criminal Court fails to secure crucial operational funding.

The warning forms the central conclusion of a comprehensive report released by Amnesty International this Tuesday, highlighting the fragile status of justice mechanisms within the conflict-affected nation.

Addressing the tribunal’s financial strain, Amnesty International legal advisor Alice Banens urged the CAR authorities, the United Nations, the European Union, and international partner states to urgently provide or maintain dedicated funding allocations for the court’s core budget.

According to Banens, although enforcement of arrest warrants issued by the Special Criminal Court has improved noticeably in recent years, dozens of high-profile suspects remain at large due to persistent logistical and political barriers to arrest.
