The Eastern Region Agricultural Value Chain Development Project is expected to benefit about 240 000 households, representing nearly 1.2 million people, with a particular focus on women and young people.
The initiative seeks to modernise agriculture in eastern Angola by promoting a more resilient and market-oriented sector while supporting smallholder farmers.
The project will focus on developing value chains in cereals, beans, soybeans, groundnuts, cassava, coffee, cocoa and palm oil. Particular emphasis will be placed on wheat and rice production to help reduce Angola’s dependence on imports while improving local food production.
By leveraging the region’s strategic position along the Lobito Corridor, the project also aims to improve market access, attract private sector investment and strengthen agriculture’s contribution to economic growth.
Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Isaac dos Anjos said the initiative marks an important step in transforming Angola’s agricultural sector. “The launch of the Eastern Region Agricultural Value Chain Development Project marks an important milestone in the transformation of Angola’s agricultural sector,” dos Anjos said.
Dos Anjos said the programme will give farming communities greater access to technology, financing, skills and markets. “We are creating the conditions for farming families to gain greater access to knowledge, technology, finance and markets, enabling them to transition from largely subsistence farming to a more productive and market-oriented agricultural system,” dos Anjos said.
Dos Anjos said the project reflects Angola’s commitment to building a modern and inclusive agricultural sector capable of creating jobs and improving rural livelihoods. “Our partnership with the African Development Bank is essential to accelerating this transformation and ensuring that agriculture continues to serve as one of the country’s main engines of economic development,” dos Anjos said.
AfDB Country Representative in Angola Pietro Toigo said the project will help unlock the agricultural potential of eastern Angola while creating economic opportunities for communities. “The AfDB is proud to support Angola at this decisive stage in unlocking the enormous agricultural potential of the Eastern Region,” Toigo said.
Toigo said the initiative combines infrastructure development, technical support and private sector involvement to drive long-term growth. “We believe this investment will help transform agriculture in Angola into a solid foundation for industrialisation, economic diversification and inclusive growth,” Toigo said.
