Angola health authorities have ramped up community-based surveillance in Cunene Province as part of a joint national and international drive to eliminate Guinea worm disease.
A multi-agency mission comprising Angola’s Ministry of Health, the World Health Organization (WHO), The Carter Center, and provincial health officials recently conducted targeted assessments across the Humbe and Cuanhama municipalities. The joint delegation inspected local water sources, evaluated active surveillance networks, and measured community awareness regarding the early detection and reporting of suspected cases.
According to the WHO, maintaining rigorous community-level surveillance remains critical to preventing the re-emergence of the parasitic disease and permanently interrupting transmission.
Alongside heightened monitoring, health authorities reaffirmed their commitment to expanding access to safe drinking water across high-risk areas. The initiative aligns with Angola’s broader national target to secure official certification as Guinea worm-free by 2030.
