Angola has officially enacted a new legal framework aimed at tackling online disinformation, introducing statutory measures to regulate the creation and dissemination of false information on digital platforms.

The new legislation establishes compliance obligations for online platforms and imposes sanctions on individuals or entities found guilty of circulating deceptive content. The law extends its jurisdiction beyond national borders, covering foreign-produced online content directed at the Angolan public.

Government officials defend the law as a crucial tool for safeguarding national security and protecting public interest in an increasingly digital news landscape.

However, the regulations have sparked debate across civil society. Rights organisations and press freedom advocates warn that broad definitions of disinformation could inadvertently curb free speech and restrict independent journalism across the country.

Speaking to Portuguese show, Caleidoscópio, Pedro Gonga, Human Rights Activist and Co-ordinator of the Yetu mu Yetu Angola Civic Association, stressed the need for clear oversight mechanisms to ensure the law is not used to silence dissenting political voices or restrict online public commentary.
