President of Angola, João Lourenço, on Thursday received the Prime Minister (PM) of São Tomé and Príncipe, Américo d’Oliveira dos Ramos, at the Cidade Alta in Luanda, marking the latter’s first official visit to Angola since taking office.

Dos Ramos recently assumed leadership of his country’s second government under the Independent Democratic Action party during the current legislative term. His trip to Luanda is being viewed as a strategic step towards revitalising bilateral cooperation and rebuilding trust between the two Lusophone nations.

Angola and São Tomé and Príncipe share longstanding historical, cultural and human ties, rooted in a common language and decades of political and economic exchange. However, analysts say recent years have required renewed diplomatic engagement to consolidate those relations and unlock fresh areas of collaboration.

The visit is expected to focus on strengthening economic co-operation, particularly in energy, trade and technical partnerships, while also reinforcing political dialogue at the highest level.

International relations specialist Feliciano Troso said the meeting carries both diplomatic and economic weight.

According to Troso, the engagement offers an opportunity to recalibrate bilateral priorities and deepen cooperation frameworks that could benefit both economies. He added that, at a time of shifting geopolitical alignments and economic pressures, closer coordination between African partners remains strategically important.
