Angola’s main opposition party, UNITA, has re-elected Adalberto Costa Júnior as its President after he secured an overwhelming 91% of votes at the party’s 14th Ordinary Congress, reinforcing his authority as the party gears up for the 2027 general elections.

Costa Júnior’s main opponent, Rafael Massanga Savimbi, conceded defeat and urged party members to remain united, emphasising that the shared objective remains achieving political alternation in Angola.

Political analysts say the congress has reshaped the internal dynamics of the party while signalling a renewed push to challenge the ruling MPLA’s long-standing hold on power.

Speaking to the Caleidoscopio, International Relations specialist Feliciano Troso said the outcome reflects growing consolidation within UNITA.

“This congress has clarified the balance of power inside UNITA,” Troso noted. “The re-election of Costa Júnior strengthens the party’s coherence and its ability to present itself as a viable alternative in 2027. The coming period will be crucial for how the opposition positions itself nationally.”

Troso added that the unified posture emerging from the congress could enhance UNITA’s credibility among undecided voters.

“If the party maintains internal unity and expands its outreach, it could significantly influence the political landscape ahead of the next election,” he said.

The 2027 general elections are expected to be one of the most consequential in Angola’s recent history, with opposition parties seeking to capitalise on public discontent over economic challenges and governance concerns.
