Argentina have been handed a major boost ahead of their Rugby Championship match against South Africa in Durban, with flyhalf Tomas Albornoz cleared to return to the Los Pumas squad.

Albornoz missed the recent double-header against Australia after dislocating a finger during Argentina’s thrilling victory over the All Blacks in Buenos Aires last month.

The 27-year-old’s return sees Nicolas Roger dropped from the squad, although it remains uncertain whether coach Felipe Contepomi will immediately reinstate Albornoz in the starting XV. Santiago Carreras impressed in both Tests against Australia and came on for Albornoz against New Zealand, kicking 23 points in Sydney as Argentina capitalised on Australian indiscipline to secure a 28-26 victory.

The Rugby Championship resumes on September 27, with the All Blacks hosting the Wallabies at Eden Park, followed by the Springboks versus Los Pumas at Kings Park. A week later, Argentina will face the Springboks again at Twickenham, while the Wallabies host the All Blacks in Perth.
