Kikwete, who served as President of Tanzania from 2005 to 2015, will support the AU’s efforts to address the complex political, peace and security challenges shaping one of the continent’s most strategically important regions. His mandate includes advancing preventive diplomacy, facilitating inclusive political dialogue, building trust among stakeholders and strengthening regional cooperation frameworks that promote long‑term peace and stability.
The Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region continues to face overlapping crises, including political transitions, fragile ceasefires, maritime security concerns and evolving geopolitical tensions. The AU noted that the area’s importance for global trade and continental stability makes coordinated engagement essential.
Kikwete will work closely with regional bodies such as the Intergovernmental Authority on Development and the East African Community, as well as international partners including the League of Arab States and the United Nations. The AU Commission stressed that cooperation between these institutions is critical to ensuring coherent and effective peace and security initiatives.
In his announcement, Youssouf expressed full confidence in the former president’s experience and diplomatic stature. “His leadership and wisdom will make a significant contribution to supporting countries in the region, as well as regional and international mechanisms, in addressing prevailing challenges and advancing durable peace, stability and prosperity,” Youssouf said.
