The proposed process will take place in Sudan under the supervision of an independent committee of Sudanese elders, with participation expected from civil, political and community stakeholders.

AUC leadership said the initiative could help bridge divisions among Sudanese groups, promote dialogue and create conditions for peace and stability.

Since the start of the conflict, the AUC has called for the preservation of Sudan’s unity, national institutions and territorial integrity. The continental body has also supported efforts to establish a democratic state based on a shared national vision.

According to the AUC, consultations should include all relevant Sudanese stakeholders and follow the principles of inclusion, national ownership and Sudanese leadership.

Broad participation would give civil society organisations, political groups, community representatives and other stakeholders an opportunity to contribute to discussions on Sudan’s future.

The AUC said the process should work towards a united, sovereign and peaceful Sudan governed by legitimate civilian institutions.

Other proposed objectives include the establishment of a single national security structure and effective mechanisms for resolving political and social disputes through peaceful means.

Sudan’s conflict has divided national institutions and deepened political, security and social tensions. The proposed dialogue seeks to create a common platform for addressing those divisions without excluding key Sudanese constituencies.

AUC leadership said a culture of dialogue remained necessary for developing a shared national vision and preventing further conflict.

The initiative also supports the AUC roadmap for Sudan and the work of the Quintet Mechanism, which forms part of regional and international efforts to support a peaceful settlement.

According to the AUC, coordination between the new initiative, the roadmap and the Quintet Mechanism could create a coherent peace strategy directed by Sudanese stakeholders.

Success will depend on credible consultations, independent supervision and meaningful participation from across Sudanese society.

The AUC said the final objective must remain the restoration of peace, civilian governance and national cohesion through a process owned by Sudanese stakeholders.
