AU has welcomed the adoption of a landmark resolution by the United Nations

African Union (AU) has welcomed the adoption of a landmark resolution by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly recognising the transatlantic slave trade as a crime against humanity.

The resolution, spearheaded by Ghana, has been widely viewed as a significant moment in ongoing global efforts to confront the historical injustices of slavery and their lasting impact.

Chairperson of the AU Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, said the development reflects Africa’s long-standing position that the slave trade must be fully acknowledged, along with its enduring social and economic consequences.

He described the move as an important step towards truth and healing, adding that it reinforces growing calls for accountability and reparative justice.

The continental body has also praised Ghana’s leadership in advancing the resolution, noting that it helps to centre African voices in international discussions on historical redress.

AU further called for a broader and more comprehensive recognition of the legacy of slavery, including its continued effects on communities across the continent and the diaspora.
