The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has expressed profound sorrow following the death of Liamine Zeroual, former President of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, who passed away on Saturday evening.

 

Youssouf extended heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of Algeria, as well as to the late President’s family, affirming the AU Commission’s full solidarity with the nation during this period of mourning.

 

Youssouf paid tribute to Zeroual as a steadfast statesman whose life embodied sacrifice, dignity, and an unwavering commitment to Algeria’s sovereignty and unity. He highlighted Zeroual’s leadership during a critical period in Algeria’s history, describing it as marked by courage, restraint, and a deep sense of responsibility to his people.

 

He also acknowledged Algeria’s enduring role as a pillar of Pan-Africanism and a champion of continental solidarity, liberation, and self-determination.

 

In honouring his memory, the Youssouf recalled Zeroual’s dedication to peace, stability, and national reconciliation, values that resonate with the Union’s vision of an integrated, prosperous, and peaceful Africa.
