AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf strongly condemned the attacks claimed by the Houthis following the group’s announcement of a naval blockade targeting Saudi Arabia.

Youssouf said the attacks represent a dangerous escalation with serious implications for peace and security in the Red Sea region and the wider Middle East.

Youssouf expressed the AU’s full solidarity with Saudi Arabia and reaffirmed support for the country’s security, sovereignty and stability.

The AU said attacks on commercial vessels and attempts to obstruct maritime traffic pose a serious threat to international maritime security and one of the world’s most strategic waterways.

Youssouf stressed that freedom of navigation and the safety of commercial shipping must be respected in line with international law.

The Red Sea is a critical trade route linking Africa, the Middle East, Europe and Asia. Any disruption to shipping through the waterway risks worsening pressure on global supply chains, energy markets and food security.

Youssouf said the security of maritime routes in the Red Sea is of vital strategic importance to Africa.

According to Youssouf, disruption to commercial shipping could undermine regional maritime connectivity, global supply chains, energy security and the economic interests of African states that depend on safe and uninterrupted access to these sea lanes.

The AU called on the Houthis to immediately stop attacks on commercial shipping and refrain from actions that could further escalate tensions.

Youssouf also urged the group to respect international law governing maritime navigation.

The statement comes amid growing concern over the security of commercial shipping routes in the Red Sea, where attacks on vessels have increased risks for trade, energy transport and humanitarian supply chains.

The AU reiterated support for regional and international efforts aimed at reducing tensions, preserving maritime security and advancing a peaceful negotiated resolution.

Youssouf said de-escalation remains essential to protecting stability in the Red Sea region and preventing the conflict from having wider political, economic and humanitarian consequences.
