African Union salutes South Africa as first African G20 host

The African Union Commission (AUC) has warmly welcomed South Africa (SA) on its appointment as G20 Chair and for hosting the G20 Summit on African soil for the first time, marking a major step in the country’s role in global governance.

The AUC highlighted SA’s efforts in championing the priorities of the Global South, driving sustainable development, and promoting inclusive global governance.

Described as a vibrant democracy, SA upholds human rights, equality, and the rule of law, with its Constitution reflecting the principles of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

The Union also noted the country’s rich diversity, with multiple races, cultures, languages, and faiths coexisting harmoniously, a strength admired worldwide.

Finally, the AUC encouraged international partners to engage with SA and the African continent based on mutual respect and constructive collaboration, supporting Africa’s role in global peace, development, and prosperity.
