The African Union (AU) marks its 24th anniversary today.
The AU plays a central role in peacekeeping, conflict resolution, economic cooperation, public health, education, gender equality and human rights.
While the AU was officially launched in July 2002 at a Summit in South Africa, succeeding the Organisation of African Unity, it traditionally commemorates its anniversary on September 9 to honour the historic 1999 Sirte Declaration that was signed in Libya.
The anniversary recognises Africa’s continuing effort to overcome colonial fragmentation, the AU said, adding that it strengthens a shared identity and builds the political and economic cooperation required for sustainable development.
