African Union (AU) member states must move away from empty political statements and focus on practical, verifiable measures to stop conflicts before they start, Angolan Minister of External Relations Téte António warned this Saturday.

Speaking to Foreign Ministers in Luanda, António declared that the credibility of continental institutions rests on their ability to deliver proactive crisis prevention rather than reacting after violence breaks out. He urged delegates to establish concrete, immediately implementable tools, backed by solid political, technical, and financial support, so no nation is left to confront instability alone.

“Our role is unequivocal; to build solid foundations that allow our heads of state and government to set directions based on sustained and effective reforms,” António told delegates. “This means strengthening prevention mechanisms to make them more proactive and capable of anticipating crises before they escalate, consolidating a culture of credible mediation, and prioritising effective solidarity between member states.”

He stressed that ministerial proposals from this extraordinary session will directly shape the binding commitments to be taken by heads of state at the upcoming summit on strengthening peace and security mechanisms.
