AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf discussed the conflict with Sudan Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Mohieldin Salem Ahmed Ibrahim on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly in New York.
The AU said discussions focused on efforts to secure a sustainable ceasefire, guarantee safe humanitarian access and protect civilians.
Youssouf reaffirmed support for Sudan’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity, while calling for a Sudanese-led political settlement that would restore peace and constitutional order.
The two sides also reviewed plans to reopen the AU Liaison Office in Khartoum. The AU said the Office would strengthen engagement with Sudanese stakeholders and support an inclusive political process.
Earlier, Youssouf co-chaired a high-level meeting of the Quad and Quintet on Sudan with United States Department of State Senior Advisor for Africa Massad Fares Boulos. It was the first joint meeting of the two coordination platforms.
Youssouf said international efforts must move from “convergence to systematic and operational coordination”.
The AU identified three priorities: an immediate humanitarian truce, cessation of hostilities and an inclusive, Sudanese-led dialogue.
Youssouf warned that the conflict was creating regional instability and increasing pressure on neighbouring countries hosting millions of Sudanese refugees.
The AU said there was no military solution and called for humanitarian, political and security processes to move forward together.
Participants discussed measures to reduce violence, protect civilians and establish monitoring and verification arrangements for any agreement.
The meeting also called for an end to external military support fuelling the conflict and closer coordination between technical teams.
The Quintet supported deeper engagement with Sudanese civilian groups and efforts to build consensus around an inclusive political process.
Youssouf separately met Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Egyptian Expatriates Dr Badr Abdelatty.
Discussions focused on African priorities, regional developments and preparations for the eighth AU Mid-Year Coordination Meeting in El Alamein.
The AU said both sides reaffirmed a commitment to closer coordination on African integration, Agenda 2063 and the continent’s interests in global governance.
