African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has emphasised the importance of continued co-operation between the AU and the United Kingdom (UK) to address a range of challenges across the continent.

Youssouf hosted UK Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, Yvette Cooper, at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa. The meeting reaffirmed the longstanding Africa–UK partnership and highlighted a shared commitment to multilateralism.

The AU Chief welcomed the UK’s support for the Africa Centres for Disease Control, particularly in strengthening emergency preparedness. Cooper, in turn, commended the AU’s leadership in global diplomacy and regional peace efforts.

Both leaders focused on the crisis in Sudan, expressing concern over the deteriorating humanitarian situation. They called for an immediate cessation of hostilities, a ceasefire, and a humanitarian truce to protect civilians and restore stability.
