The African Unite Borders Bus Trucks Association (AUBBTA) has accused the Zimbabwean government of economic sabotage and undermining the African Continental Free Trade Area following the traffic congestion outside the Beitbridge Border Post in Musina.

Truck drivers were stuck in long traffic which stretched for about 20 kilometres earlier this week.

The congestion has been attributed to slow processing times and limited parking capacity on the Zimbabwean side.

On Wednesday, the Border Management Authority (BMA) confirmed that the traffic was starting to ease.

AUBBTA Chairperson Mukhwathi Phumudzo says the delays may be influenced by the recent repatriations of undocumented foreign nationals.

“This discourages investor truck owners to prefer other ports of entry such as Tanzania which also tarnishes the country’s image. We are calling upon both counterparts, President Cyril Ramaphosa and President Emmerson Mnangagwa, ZIMRA, ZRP and BMA and other relevant stakeholders to engage on a permanent solution for this traffic congestion, because failure we are going to have unnecessary loss of life due to dehydration.”
