Mozambique and Tanzania Investigate Cause of Fatal MV Chambo Boat fire

Authorities in Malawi, Mozambique, and Tanzania have launched investigations into a fatal fire that destroyed the Mozambican-registered vessel, the MV Chambo, on Lake Malawi over the weekend.

The passenger and cargo vessel was travelling from Tanzania toward Mozambique when it caught fire and sank in Tanzanian waters early on Sunday. At least three people, including a Malawian, a Tanzanian, and a Mozambican child, lost their lives, while more than 40 passengers were rescued by emergency teams and local fishermen.

The MV Chambo serves as a vital cross-border transport link connecting Mozambique, Tanzania, and Malawi’s isolated Likoma and Chizumulu islands. Local communities and island leaders have expressed deep concern over the disruption to essential travel and trade as inquiries into the cause of the blaze continue.
