Bafana Bafana Captain Ronwen Williams says the squad firmly believes they can finally secure South Africa’s long-awaited second Africa Cup of Nations title when the tournament kicks off in Morocco later this month.
Bafana assembled this week for their final preparation camp ahead of the competition, which runs from December 21 to 18 January.
Bafana Bafana last lifted the continental trophy nearly 30 years ago on home soil, and after their impressive bronze medal finish at the previous AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire, Williams says the team is determined to go one better.
This is what he had to say: “Yes, of course, that will be the expectations. Now that is the expectation we have for ourselves, that we want to go one better. It’s not going to be easy. Everyone is probably thinking like us now, that they want to win it. Morocco is the host nation; they don’t want to let their people down. So it’s not going to be easy. We’re going to have to double our efforts, have the right minds, have the killer mindset each and every game from the first to the last minute, and just use the experience we had in the last AFCON and build on what we’ve built in the last few years to carry us through.
