Banks are expected to play a central role in financing Africa’s response to climate change, as both major funders of high-carbon industries and key drivers of the shift towards cleaner energy.
This role will come under focus at the African Matters Summit, set to take place at Wits Business School in Johannesburg South Africa (SA) next week.
Dr Manessah Alagbaoso, Head of Business Ecosystems and Sustainability at Standard Bank, says the bank is already playing a leading role in funding climate-related initiatives in SA
He says the bank aims to mobilise R450 billion ($24 billion) in climate finance, with a strong focus on ensuring that funding reaches small and medium-sized enterprises, which are key to driving inclusive and sustainable economic growth.
