Ellis said the team managed the match well and showed greater intensity after the break. “We were resolute throughout the game and when we went into half-time we changed a few things and we then got the goal,” Ellis said.
Ellis acknowledged questions about SA’s performances earlier in the tournament but expressed relief that the team achieved its objective. “I know people at home are asking why we couldn’t play like that from the beginning of the competition, but at least the dream is still alive,” Ellis said.
Ellis also reserved special praise for goalkeeper Kaylin Swart, who was named Player of the Match after producing several important saves to help secure the win.
Swart’s performance proved crucial as SA protected a narrow lead against a determined Nigerian side, ensuring Banyana remained in contention for a World Cup place.
The victory provides a significant boost for Ellis and the squad following disappointment against Morocco, where defeat ended hopes of direct qualification.
Attention now turns to a busy international schedule, with SA preparing for both Olympic qualifiers and the intercontinental playoffs.
Ellis said the next few months would be important as the coaching staff assesses the squad and plans for upcoming challenges. “We have an Olympic Games qualifier before that play-off, and we also have the Super League back home restarting after only five games in the league,” Ellis said.
“So, the next couple of months are going to be crucial on how we plan to strengthen the squad.”
The win over Nigeria offers renewed confidence for SA as preparations begin for the decisive playoff matches that will determine whether Banyana secure a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
