In Benin, lawmakers on Saturday approved a constitutional amendment extending the presidential term from five to seven years, while maintaining the two-term limit.
The reform also establishes a Senate composed of at least 25 members, with some appointed by the President and others selected through specific rights-based provisions.
These changes are set to take effect during the next general elections in 2026, reshaping the country’s long-term political calendar. Before implementation, the amendments must pass a conformity review by the Constitutional Court and be promulgated by President Patrice Talon.
Political commentator Aristide Kanoussou said the reforms mark a significant shift in Benin’s governance structure and could have lasting implications for the nation’s political landscape.
