Benin and Niger have finalised the first phase of technical talks aimed at mending diplomatic ties, bringing the two West African neighbors closer to reopening their shared border.
The breakthrough builds directly on a high-profile diplomatic visit to Niamey by Beninese President Romuald Wadagni. Following a joint review of the initial findings, both sides formally reaffirmed their commitment to lifting border restrictions and reviving bilateral co-operation, which had been frozen since regional tensions flared in July 2023.
Technical experts from both nations are scheduled to reconvene before the end of the week to synthesize their conclusions. Their final, combined report will then be submitted directly to Wadagni and Niger’s Head of State, General Abdourahamane Tiani, to finalise the reopening roadmap.
