Botswana’s agricultural department has launched a new programme aimed at boosting productivity in the beef and dairy sectors

Botswana’s agricultural department has launched a new programme aimed at boosting productivity in the beef and dairy sectors through targeted extension support.

The initiative seeks to expand the national cattle herd from the current 1.7 million to five million by 2030, while also improving local milk production.

Botswana’s cattle population has fallen sharply from around three million in the 1970s, a decline attributed to droughts and shifting land use patterns.

Agriculture remains central to the country’s rural economy and food security, and the government views the sector as key to driving economic transformation and creating sustainable livelihoods.
