Botswana’s President Duma Boko and Nigerian industrialist Aliko Dangote have called on business leaders and governments across the continent to spearhead Africa’s development, warning against a continued reliance on foreign investment to drive domestic growth.
Speaking during talks in Gaborone, Boko stressed that while Africa has no shortage of talent or big ideas, the real challenge lies in getting projects off the ground.
Correspondent, Thamo Kapisa noted that Boko singled out cross-border infrastructure as a prime area for action, confirming that Botswana is currently in talks with neighbouring Namibia to construct the Trans-Kalahari rail line.
Dangote, founder of the Dangote Group, echoed the sentiment, arguing that the private sector and African governments must work together to change external perceptions that the continent is too risky for investment. Supporting the call, Botswana Vice President Ndaba Gaolathe added that turning these partnerships into concrete projects will be vital for tackling local unemployment and driving long-term economic growth.
