Women’s football in Botswana is expanding rapidly, but a lack of corporate sponsorship and inadequate facilities continue to hamper its full development.

That is the word from Tsholofelo Setlhoko, Head of Women’s Football at the Botswana Football Association, who spoke during a recent visit by the African Club Association (ACA) to Botswana.

Setlhoko noted that despite ongoing structural hurdles, the domestic game has hit major milestones, most notably the launch of a new national second-tier competition. However, keeping clubs financially afloat remains a struggle.

Highlighting both the progress and the operational bottlenecks on the ground, Setlhoko pointed out that according to her, the game has made massive strides in recent years, particularly with the introduction of a 20-team First Division split evenly between the northern and southern regions. However, she added that according to league officials, sponsorship shortages and poor playing infrastructure remain major hurdles, expressing hope that strategic backing from the African Club Association could help align resources with club needs.

The ACA delegation visited Botswana to engage local teams, encourage registration under the independent continental umbrella body, and explore practical ways to support domestic clubs.
