Chief Operations Officer (COO) of Boxing South Africa (SA), Mandla Ntlanganiso, has paid tribute to South African boxer Xolisani Ndongeni following the fighter’s announcement that he is retiring.

Speaking to Channel Africa, Ntlanganiso reflected on Ndongeni’s career, describing him as “a charismatic boxer and a beloved figure among boxing fans.”

“He honed his talent in Duncan Village, Eastern Cape, and over the years, he traded blows with some of the country’s most respected pugilists, including Lulama Titise, Ayanda Yapi and former IBS champion Mzongefana,” Ntlanganiso said. “With 33 wins and only eight losses against credible opponents, Ndongeni has done what he needed to do in the sport.”

The COO also highlighted the impact Ndongeni had on fans, noting the excitement his entrances would generate and a song dedicated to him by supporters.

Ntlanganiso discussed the tradition in boxing, where athletes may choose to retire not necessarily on a high note but when the time feels right. He suggested that Ndongeni could still have a “goodbye fight” in his hometown, providing a final opportunity to celebrate his career before leaving the ring permanently.

Turning to the broader state of boxing in SA, Ntlanganiso said the sport is progressing steadily. “Governance and administration are improving, with a solid executive and board in place. We have new promoters and tournaments across the country, including East London, KwaZulu-Natal and Pretoria, with a particular focus on women’s boxing,” he said.

He highlighted a recent all-female tournament held in Pretoria, noting the role of boxing in raising awareness on gender-based violence and suicide, and announced plans to launch the Eastern Cape Boxing Development Program to nurture new talent with zero to three fights.

“From April to September this year, we delivered 35 tournaments across SA. There is still room for growth, but progress is being made, and our focus remains on developing boxers and expanding opportunities nationwide,” Ntlanganiso concluded.
