International relations expert Kingsley Makhubela says the demarche of United States (US) Ambassador to South Africa (SA), Leo Brent Bozell III, for the third time in nine months, further deepens tensions between SA and the US.
Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on International Relations and Co-operation says it will soon invite the department to explain the circumstances that led to the demarche.
Makhubela says, “The message that’s coming out quite clearly is that there’s an escalation in terms of the tension between the two countries and it appears that on this side, the American ambassador is failing in terms of restarting relations, resetting the relations between the two countries.”
“So he’s actually failing in his diplomatic mission because the basic function of an ambassador is to build relations between the two countries. So based on that you can see he’s failing,” adds Makhubela.
