Brazil President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva says the first round of the presidential election was quite unexpected.
His political rival Flavio Bolsonaro performed better than expected.
Bolsonaro won 47% of the vote and Lula managed to get 45%.
Experts had predicted that Lula will lead the first round by at least 3 percent points.
The veteran Brazilian leader Lula says his campaign will start afresh, adding that the runoff is the moment of truth.
The campaign will be anchored on the cost of living, corruption and crime in Latin America’s largest economy.
Senator Bolsonaro says Brazilians have expressed confidence in him, and he has vowed to fight for Brazil’s future rather than power.
He further insisted that Brazil must choose a modern government that will restore democracy with fewer ministries.
The runoff is scheduled for October 25.
