Burkina Faso enhances supervision of creative sector

Authorities in Burkina Faso have further tightened oversight of the nation’s cultural sector following the suspension of 18 public events deemed contrary to “public morality”.

The suspensions mark the latest development in a sweeping government initiative launched in March 2025 to regulate and clean up the artistic and entertainment landscape.

The move has sparked fresh discussion across the West African nation regarding the balance between preserving traditional social values, maintaining freedom of artistic expression, and supporting the economic growth of the local creative industry.

Civil society activist Marcel Ouoba highlighted that increased state supervision raises important questions about the future direction of Burkina Faso’s cultural sector during a period of broader national transition.
