Regional efforts to cool down the conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have hit a wall in Burundi, with Congolese opposition leaders flatly refusing to open the door to constitutional changes back home.
Burundi President Évariste Ndayishimiye, who is currently leading the African Union, hosted a meeting in Bujumbura early this week. He brought together a delegation of Congolese opposition politicians and top religious leaders, hoping to find a political way out of the ongoing security crisis.
But the talks quickly hit a roadblock. The opposition leaders drew a strict “red line,” making it clear they will not look at any proposals that involve rewriting the DRC’s constitution, a move they see as a non-negotiable boundary.
