Burundi sets presidential election for May 3, 2027

Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye has officially signed a presidential decree summoning voters for the country’s upcoming presidential election, scheduled to take place on May 3, 2027.

The decree sets the electoral process in motion as political parties prepare for the high-stakes poll. Six political formations have already designated their presidential candidates, including the ruling National Council for the Defense of Democracy, Forces for the Defense of Democracy (CNDD-FDD), which has been in power since 2005 and nominated Ndayishimiye as its candidate in April 2026.

However, the upcoming election cycle faces criticism over financial barriers introduced by the country’s revised electoral framework. Under the new Electoral Code, the presidential candidacy deposit has been raised to 100 million Burundian francs ( $50 000 ), a fivefold increase from the $10 000 threshold enforced during previous election cycles.

Commenting on the restrictive financial requirements and the broader electoral landscape, Aimé Magera, international representative for the opposition National Congress for Freedom, noted that the steep deposit poses a significant threat to political inclusion:

“The drastic increase in the presidential deposit under the new Electoral Code is prohibitive and deliberately out of reach for most political parties. Raising the fee to $50 000 creates an uneven playing field designed to stifle opposition participation and restrict democratic choice for the Burundian electorate ahead of the 2027 poll.”
