Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe has praised the continent’s representatives following their impressive showing at the recent FIFA World Cup in North America.
Highlighting a historic tournament for African football across the United States, Mexico, and Canada, Motsepe commended the teams for making the continent proud after nine out of the10 African nations advanced to the second round.
In a further boost for African football, Motsepe also announced a massive 100% increase in prize money for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). Champions of this year’s tournament will now walk away with $2 million.
The move forms part of a broader strategy to accelerate professionalisation and financial sustainability within the women’s game.
“Women’s football is important and we want our young women players to build a career in football and part of that involves giving them decent salaries so they can maintain themselves and their families.”
