South Africa’s (SA) Constitutional law analyst says the call for the impeachment of President Cyril Ramaphosa, following the recent release of the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) Phala Phala report, is unwise, and likely to fail.

The report has raised questions about Ramaphosa’s knowledge of an off-the books SAPS investigation into the 2020 theft at his Phala Phala farm.

The revelation of these parallel police probe has led to renewed calls in political quarters, for Ramaphosa’s impeachment.

But the Council for the Advancement of the SA Constitution Executive Director, Lawson Naidoo, says this is ill-conceived.

Following the release of the IPID report, which was concluded in 2023, Parliament has been brought into the fray, with calls for the revival of impeachment proceedings against Ramaphosa.

The African Transformation Movement, who led the charge calling for impeachment in 2022, has already written to National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza.
