Democratic Alliance (DA) Ward 104 by-election candidate Sinovuyo Dyokwe was shot dead in Du Noon over the weekend shortly after returning from a voting station in the area, in an incident that has raised concerns about political violence.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the killing, while the DA has announced a reward for information that could lead to the arrest of those responsible. The incident has intensified fears that violence could escalate as campaigning gains momentum ahead of the November local government elections.
DA Cape Town Metro Chairperson JP Smith warned that recent developments could point to a broader trend of politically motivated attacks if not addressed swiftly. “We all understand why the Political Killings Task Team was established in KwaZulu-Natal,” Smith said.
Smith said similar patterns emerging across multiple provinces could pose a serious threat to the integrity of the electoral process. “If we are seeing widespread flare-ups across SA if unchecked, it will lead to a very violent election,” Smith said.
He urged the national leadership of the SA Police Service and the Minister of Police to act quickly to prevent further incidents.
Smith said law enforcement agencies need to develop a clear and coordinated strategy to safeguard political candidates and ensure that campaigning can proceed without fear. The killing comes as concerns grow over safety during election periods, particularly in areas with a history of political tensions.
