South Africa’s (SA) Democratic Alliance in the Northern Cape has called for an urgent investigation into more than 6 000 incidents of irregular expenditure within the provincial Roads and Public Works Department, amounting to more than $216 million.

The DA’s provincial Spokesperson for Roads and Public Works, Gizella Opperman, says the road rehabilitation project in Kathu is among the contracts raising concern.

“Following the department’s total disregard for compliance to legal processes in project and contract management, the DA has requested the Auditor-General of SA for an in-depth investigation into the 5 677 uncleared cases. This department can no longer be allowed to squander public funds at the expense of incomplete, delayed and poorly executed public works and transport infrastructure projects in the province,” Opperman said.
