Thousands of university students in Cameroon face further disruption to their studies, as lecturers continue an indefinite strike just weeks before the start of the 2026 to 2027 academic year.
The National Union of Higher Education Teachers (SYNES) says government efforts to address its demands have fallen short.
The union is seeking full payment of outstanding research and modernisation allowances, as well as long-standing academic debts.
Professor Jeannette Wogaing Fotso, Secretary General of Cameroon’s SYNES says she does not understand why the government of Cameroon has allowed university lecturers, who build the future of the Central African state to wallow in poverty.
She also says that, despite repeated efforts by the union to meet the Prime Minister and President, no positive response has been received.
